“Mom!” What are you doing!” Cindy’s son Adrian screamed “You are pulling away the plants!”
“ I’m not pulling away the plants.” Cindy replied calmly, bent over her garden
“But mom, you are!” Adrian insisted
“Oh! you mean these?” Cindy straightened up and motioned to the seedlings she has in her hand.
“Yes! Why are you taking them out?” Adrian asked looking confused
“Well, not in the way you think. I am thinning the plants.”
“You what?
“Well sonny boy” Adrian rolled his eyes at the mention of “Sonny boy”, “Thinning is when I take out some of the plants because the garden is crowded, that way, the rest of teh plants can grow better.”
“But they all look good.” Adrian protested
“Yes I know, but if I don’t thin them out, they all keep growing and in the end, we won’t have much to harvest.”
Adrian stood silently for a moment, then his eyes lit up, “Oh, I get it! Remember last year, the carrot patch?”
“Oh, don’t remind me.” Cindy replied him
“We had a lot of carrots but they were so close together, and then when we harvested them, they were the size of my pinky!” Adrian finished with a laugh.
“Yes, exactly. So I thin them and thin them now.”
“It’s kinda sad. You have to take them out. They all look good”
“Yeah.., it is kinda sad.” Cindy said, looking at the pulled out sprouts in her hand. “But it is for the best.”
…sometimes in life, the way to grow is to let go…
…let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”
