Kindness…Does it cost to be?

Kathy hopes and prays that the house showing would go well. More than that, she hopes that her clients will buy the house. She hasn’t made a sale recently and she is trying hard not to stress a lot about it. Her clients today are “big deals”.

She parks the car and looks over at her son who is sitting at the back. The babysitter had called in sick this morning and she couldn’t make alternate arrangements. So she brought him with her.

“James, remember what we talked about…” she goes over the list of do’s and “don’ts’ with her four-year old.

As they get out of the car, on a second thought, she grabs a pack of wipes and drops it in her purse.

“So, what do you think?” She smiles at her clients, The Linds.

The showing of the house went well. James has been so well behaved, he deserves an ice cream.

“What do you think?” Mrs. Lind asks her husband.

“I’ll let you choose on this one, honey,” Mr. Lind replies.

“Well…” Mrs. Lind begins to say, “ I think the asking price…”

“Mom,” James cuts in

“One moment, James,” Kathy replies.

“I need to go potty!” He says tugging at her arm.

“Umm..excuse me,” Kathy says to Mrs. Lind. Then, turning to James. “There’s a bathroom right there.”

She leads him into a bathroom just off the hallway.

She comes back to Mrs. Lind, putting up a matter-of -fact face, “So, you were talking about the asking price?”

“Well, I think the asking price is reasonable, considering that the previous owner will update the fixtures on…”

“Mom!” James yells from the bathroom.

Kathy looks in the direction of the bathroom, then back to Mrs. Lind.

“Mom! My poop clogged the toilet!”

Kathy gasps, freezes to the spot.

Mrs. Lind reaches out and touches her arm, “I have five kids. They are all adults now, but I remember those early days. Go take care of him. We will be here when you’re done.”

Kathy lets out a deep breath, “Thank you!” She grabs her purse, thankful that she had brought the wipes, and walks to the bathroom.
